Our mission statement

Ship in the sunset The London Universities Maritime Law and Policy Research Group (LUMLP) is a non-profit making collaborative network of London academic institutions with research interests in Maritime Law and Policy. We discuss, disseminate and develop research in Maritime Law and Policy.

Maritime and Commercial Rounds

We hold regular “Rounds” for the discussion of recent developments and current research in maritime and commercial law. These are held online.

The Rounds are intended to be informal and relaxed. The first hour of each session is occupied by two or three presentations, each on a topic or theme related to maritime and/or commercial law (eg, a recent case or legislative measure, a recent trend or phenomenon, recent research in the area, etc). The presentations need not involve substantial preparation: for example, we are delighted to have presentations on work-in progress (including even ‘this is very much work in progress’). Slides are optional. The second part of each session is then dedicated to a general discussion amongst attendees.

At the last Rounds (7 March 2025) the topics presented were:

  • 'Seeking Substantial Justice in The Sea Justice [2024] SGCA 32' (Navid Hatamipour, National University of Singapore)
  • 'The Seafarers Wages Act and the Race to the Bottom' (Sandhya Drew and Marcus Soanes, City St George’s, UoL).

A full list of topics discussed at past Rounds can be found here.

If you would like to kept informed of dates, attend or introduce/present at the Rounds, please contact Prof Jason Chuah or Mr Jeffrey Thomson.

News about the Rounds is also published via the LUMLPRG group on LinkedIn.

All proposals for presentation are good proposals.
