Professor Nina Boeger is Professor of Law at the City Law School. Her research and teaching areas include corporate governance, company law and ownership, social and cooperative enterprise, regulatory governance and EU law.

Dr Marios Costa is Senior Lecturer in Law at The City Law School. He is currently investigating legal accountability and the rules on standing of private parties seeking judicial review in the light of the Court's of Justice restrictive jurisprudence.

Professor Elaine Fahey is Professor of EU Law and Associate Dean (International) at The City Law School. Her research interests span the relationship between EU law and global governance, trade, transatlantic relations, the EU’s Area of Freedom, Security and Justice and the study of law beyond the State.

Her publications, amongst others, include a monograph, The Global Reach of EU Law (Routledge, 2016). She is co-investigator in the Marie Curie ITN on EU and Transatlantic Investment and Trade ('EUTIP') (2017-2021) and was awarded a British Academy/ Leverhulme Research Grant for the project Between Internal Laws and Global Practices: UN Instruments in the EU’s Area of Freedom, Security and Justice.

She is an academic co-editor of the Routledge UACES book series, Associate Editor of European Papers and on the Editorial Board of CUP’s European Journal of Risk Regulation.

Dr Charlotte Godziewski is a Lecturer in International Politics at City, University of London. Her research explores the politics of health in the European Union. Her book, The Politics of Health Promotion in the European Union, was published in 2022 with Palgrave Macmillan.

Charlotte is one of the coordinators of ‘EUHealthGov’, the UACES-funded research network on EU Health Governance.

Professor Tamara Hervey is Jean Monnet Professor of EU Law ad personam at the City Law School. Tamara is currently working in three broad areas: transnational, global and comparative health law; equality and diversity; and legal education. Current projects include an interdisciplinary Jean Monnet Network, led by Katherine Fierlbeck, Dalhousie, Canada, focused on European health policy; work on EU law and COVID-19 for the Covid Lex Atlas, led by King’s College London; collaboration with the Nuffield Trust on Health and Trade; work for the Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission; and comparative abortion law, led by Mary Ziegler, Florida State University, USA.  Tamara is the editor of the entries on EU health law for the OUP Online Encyclopaedia of EU Law, led by Laurence Gormley, Sacha Garben and Kai Purnhagen, and is co-editor, with Therese Murphy, of the Hart Publishing series on Law & Health.

Dr Ilias Kapsis joined City Law School as Senior Lecturer in August 2023. His main research interests include issues of regulation and competition law in financial services and technology markets with emphasis on the regulation of fintech, cryptocurrencies, CBDCs and artificial intelligence. Ilias has presented in conferences and published in these areas.

Ilias's research explores theories and models of regulation, which safeguard market stability and consumer protection without stifling innovation or endangering the level-playing field in markets with significant technological innovation.

His teaching interests include banking law, technology law, competition law, investment law, commercial law, land law and equity & trusts.

Dr Maria Kendrick is Lecturer in Law at The City Law School. Her research areas cover: EU Law, including integration, differentiated integration and tax; UK Public Law; and Human Rights.

Professor Panos Koutrakos is Professor of European Law at The City Law School. In addition to EU external relations, Panos writes on the law of the single market, with emphasis on the free movement of goods and services. He is the joint editor of the European Law Review.

Dr Sara Silvestri is Senior Lecturer in International Politics. She researches on religion and politics, including issues of freedom of religion and religious discrimination, religious engagement in the EU and global politics, as well as EU migration and refugee policies.

Dr Koen Slootmaeckers Dr Koen Slootmaeckers is a Senior Lecturer in International Politics at the Department of International Politics at City, University of London. His research focusses on gender and sexuality politics in Europe and is particularly interested in analysing hierarchies within the international system. More specifically, Koen has studied the EU accession of Serbia and how this process affects LGBT politics and activism. His more recent project is interested in the transnational politics of LGBT Pride Parades.

Ryan Stones is a Senior Lecturer at the City Law School. Ryan's research interests lie at the intersection between competition law and legal theory. He is the module leader for the LLB Competition Law elective, and also teaches Public Law on the GDL programme.

Francesca Strumia is Professor of Law at the City Law School. Her research interests span the role of citizenship in its supranational and global dimension, the relation between free movement and international migration, cosmopolitan theories of sovereignty and the regulation of skilled migration.

She is currently leading a project on European Narratives with Professor Kalypso Nicolaïdis (Oxford/EUI) and she is a member of the Transnational Democracy Initiative at the EUI School of Transnational Governance.

She has co-founded the Citizen Brexit Observatory with the European Citizen Action Service in Brussels and she is a member of the Embassy of Italy in the UK advisory group on Brexit and citizen rights.

Professor David Townend is a Professor of Law in the City Law School with expertise in the nature of the key concepts of privacy, confidentiality, property, and the public interest.

His theoretical work is focused on the relationship between individual and collective responsibility in relation to health and life science research; politeness and governance; and, on the concepts of privacy and property in research governance.

His practical work focuses on data protection and privacy in medical and health research (especially Big Data and data sharing issues), and on the creation of effective research governance.

Professor Philippa Watson is Professor in Law at The City Law School. Her research interests lie in the sphere of EU social & employment law and competition law. She has recently published (with Evelyn Ellis) EU Antidiscrimination Law (OUP, November 2012). The second edition of her monograph EU Social and Employment law (OUP) will be published in March 2014. She is Secretary to the UK Association for European Lawy (UKAEL)

Dr Adrienne Yong is Senior Lecturer in Law at The City Law School. She researches EU citizenship law and European human rights, and is interested in the human rights effects of the UK’s withdrawal from the EU on EU citizens in the UK and British citizens in the EU. Her monograph, The Rise and Decline of Fundamental Rights in EU Citizenship was published in 2019 with Hart Publishing.

Christos Karetsos is a PhD researcher on a full-time City Law School Doctoral Studentship. Christos holds an LLM from the London School of Economics (Corporate and Commercial Law). His thesis is titled 'Navigating the Foreign Investment Control Landscape: FDI screening in the EU, US and the UK'.

Giulio Kowalski is a Law graduate (Master’s Degree) from the University of Trieste and holds an LLM in Competition Law from King’s College London. Before joining City University, Giulio also practised Data Protection Law, Competition Law and Media Law at two different international law firms in Milan and completed an internship in the field of merger control at the European Commission's DG Competition in Brussels.

Dr Anna Labedzka obtained her PhD from City Law School, defending a thesis under the title ‘The European Union and Shaping of Its Neighbourhood: In Pursuit of Stability, Security and Prosperity'. Anna is currently a Senior Lecturer at Kingston University London, where she teaches on the International Trade Law and Commercial Law modules.

Dr Isabella Mancini obtained her PhD from City Law School in 2020 under the Horizon 2020 project on Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership Innovative Training Network (TTIP-ITN). She defended a thesis entitled 'A Deep Trade Agenda for Fundamental Rights: Framing Fundamental Rights for the new generation EU Trade Agreements with other Developed Economies'. Isabella currently serves as a Policy Advisor at the UK Government Department for Business and Trade.

Eva Pander Maat hold an LLM in Legal Research (cum laude) from Utrecht University. Her thesis focuses on the incorporation of the EU’s climate ambitions in EU trade policy and law. The European Green Deal sets unprecedented climate aims, most notably that of climate neutrality by 2050. The EU is intent to merge these aims with economic growth and the expansion of international trade. However, the incorporation of climate concerns and environmental protection in EU trade policy and law invokes political and legal challenges: climate concerns are often antithetical to trade interests and at tension with the rule-based multilateral trade order. Eva’s thesis will investigate how the EU faces these challenges whilst observing the coherence of EU external action and WTO law. Her PhD is funded by a Jean Monnet Scholarship.

Dr Eugenio Vaccari obtained his PhD from City Law School in 2018. He defended a thesis with title 'Insolvency statutory rules and contractual freedom: a study on the limits of corporate insolvency law in the Anglo/American tradition'. His research interests include corporate and insolvency law. Eugenio is currently a Senior Lecturer in Law at Royal Holloway, University of London.

Vasiliki Verykaki is a PhD student working on a thesis entitled 'Proactive Technological Strategies for Addressing Algorithmic Collusion: A Comparative Study in Digital Markets within the UK and EU'. She holds an LL.M in Competition, Innovation and Trade Law from London School of Economics (LSE) and an LL.B from Democritus University of Thrace.

Professor Sir Alan Dashwood is former Professor of Law at City, University of London. He specialises in the law of the European Union, and appears regularly in proceedings before the Court of Justice of the EU. He was the founding Editor of European Law Review.

Joseph Dunne has been appointed Director of the European Parliament Liaison Office in Washington DC, which was set up to foster and develop relations between the European Parliament (EP) and the United States Congress, from October 1, 2019. In 2018, Joseph was a Senior Resident Fellow at the German Marshall Fund in Washington DC and a Visiting Fellow at the Schar School of Policy and Government at George Mason University. Up to that time, Joseph was a Director in the Directorate General for European Parliamentary Research Service. He was previously Head of Secretariat for the Internal Market and Consumer Protection Committee and Deputy Chef de Cabinet for EP President Pat Cox. Before the Parliament, Joseph Dunne served in the Irish Department of Foreign Affairs. He edited the first edition of ‘Mapping the Cost of Non-Europe’ in April 2014. Joseph has a B. Mod from Trinity College Dublin and an MA in EU Law from King’s College London.

Francesca Finelli is a PhD candidate in International and EU Law at the University of Luxembourg, under joint supervision with the University of Pisa. Her research focuses on international economic sanctions, including EU restrictive measures, and she studies how different jurisdictions counter the phenomenon of sanctions evasion. Specifically, Francesca conducts a comparative analysis of the legal frameworks in the EU, US, and UK, examining their response to circumvention. Her academic interests include public international law, EU external relations law, the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP), and sanctions law.

Anna Fiorentini is a PhD Student at the University of Bologna Alma Mater Studiorum. She holds an LL.M (Intellectual Property and Information Society) from King’s College London. Her main research interests include EU Health Law, Big Data, Artificial Intelligence and Data Protection. Anna is currently working on her PhD thesis on 'European Health Data Space. Free movement of health data for biomedical research purposes between innovation and respect for fundamental rights'.

Dr Oliver Garner is Maurice Wohl Research Leader in European Rule of Law at the Bingham Centre for the Rule of Law, British Institute of International and Comparative Law. He holds a BA in Jurisprudence from the University of Oxford, and an LL.M in Comparative, European and International Laws and a Doctorate in Laws from the European University Institute (EUI). His PhD research analysed withdrawal and opt-outs from the European Union. He is also an editor of the CEU Democracy Institute RevDem live platform and the European Law Blog.

Ivanka Karaivanova is a City Law School Alumna and a PhD Researcher at the European University Institute (EUI) in Florence, Italy. She holds a Master of Laws from Sofia University, an LL.M in European Commercial Law from City, University of London and an LL.M in Comparative, European and International Laws from EUI. Her research interests include European Law and Governance, Europeanisation and European Integration, Protection of Fundamental Rights in Europe, Consumer and Data Protection, Digital Transformation and AI Regulation.

Timothy Lyons KC, BL, Advocaat/Avocat Brussels Bar, was called to the Bar in 1980 and took Silk in 2003. He has also been called to the Bar of the Republic of Ireland and is a member of a number of EU law organisations including the Irish Centre for European Law. The early years of Timothy's career were spent doing general chancery work. He then spent a considerable time in revenue chambers and now deals with a wide range of public and commercial law matters. His particular areas of interest include general EU law, UK and EU trade law and customs duties; tax law; WTO and investment law, etc.

Dr Rebecca Zahn is a Reader in Law at the University of Strathclyde Glasgow where she teaches EU law, labour law, commercial law and Scots contract law. Her main research interests and specialisation lie in European, national and comparative labour and employment law. Rebecca's most recent scholarly work is on the relationship between historical studies and labour law in order to understand the development of labour/employment laws and their role in society. Rebecca is a co-Principal Investigator (together with Prof Elaine Fahey and Dr Fabien Terpan) in the Research Network EUFUTURES.

Between Internal Laws and Global Practices: UN Instruments in the EU’s Area of Freedom, Security and Justice

Dr Elaine Fahey was a 2016 recipient of a British Academy/Leverhulme research grant. The funding enabled her to carry out the research project titled, “Between Internal Laws and Global Practices: UN Instruments in the EU’s Area of Freedom, Security and Justice”, over 12 months, beginning in November 2016. Dr Fahey’s research assesses how the EU promotes and obtains its norms in its Area of Freedom, Security and Justice (AFSJ) and its specific place in the global legal order. The project sought to generate transparency in understanding EU rule-making practices and develop an appreciation of the relationship between EU law and global governance. ESRC and AHRC UK-Japan Social Sciences, Arts and Humanities (SSH) Connections Scheme

Professor Elaine Fahey, Dr Luke McDonagh, Dr Enrico Bonadio, Professor David Collins and Anthony Rogers have been awarded funding for their project titled “TRILATTRADE: UK-EU-Japan Trade Relations: Modelling Trade, Regulation and IP.” The ESRC-funded TRILATTRADE research project seeks to model the legal framework of the trilateral UK-EU-Japan Trade, Regulation and IP relationship. Trade, regulation and IP constitute three core pillars of international, national and regional economic law and policy frameworks. This is relevant to the functional operation of trade and its innovation.

This project will address these core pillars with three interlocking thematic strands:

• UK-Japan Trade;
• UK-EU-Japan Regulatory Cooperation and Data Flows; and
• UK-EU-Japan Intellectual Property.

The Brexit effect on individual human rights under Article 8 ECHR

Dr Adrienne Yong was awarded funding in 2017/18 and 2018/19 under HEIF, intended to fund projects that encourage research impact. This culminated in an event that sought to analyse the state-of-play of immigration in Brexit Britain, faced by the challenges that governance brings of almost 4 million individuals who have previously not needed governing. It gathered views from policy and legal practice to explain the current state of immigration in the UK post-referendum, views from the ground of experiences of applicants to the EU Settlement Scheme through organisations representing citizens applying for settled status and evaluated the academic viewpoint of the Brexit effect on citizens’ rights.

EU Trade and Investment Policy (EUTIP) Innovative Training Networks (ITN)

Professor Elaine Fahey and Isabella Mancini represent City as a partner institution and beneficiary of the Horizon2020 funded EUTIP ITN. Its aim is to foster interdisciplinary research into the evolving international trade policy of the EU with a view to create a significantly increased European knowledge base and research capacity on EU law and policy of the regulation of international trade through free trade agreements (FTAs) with third countries, thus helping Europe to safeguard the benefits of international trade (wealth, jobs, etc.) while addressing  the challenges of its regulation (competence, democracy, accountability, environmental- and labour, standards, etc.)

INBOTS CSA consortium

Dr Luke McDonagh and Dr Enrico Bonadio are the lead intellectual property law investigators within the EU-funded, Horizon2020 INBOTS (Inclusive Robotics for a Better Society) Consortium. The INBOTS CSA consortium, centred at the Cajal Institute in Spain, brings together 25 partners from 12 different countries on the basis of multidisciplinary expertise and trans-nationality. City, University of London is one of these partners, and is one of only two partners, the other being the University of Leeds, based in the UK. INBOTS aims to create a community hub bringing together experts to debate and develop a responsible research and innovation paradigm for interactive robotics – or robots that “interact in close proximity with humans”, such as those used in the fields of smart prosthetics, exoskeletons and robot workers.

A Jean Monnet Chair is a teaching post with a specialisation in European Union Studies for university professors. It can only be held by one professor, who must provide the minimum of 90 teaching hours per academic year over a period of three consecutive years. In addition, the Chair must carry out at least one additional activity per academic year.

Professor Elaine Fahey has been awarded a Jean Monnet Chair in Law & Transatlantic Relations. Professor Panos Koutrakos has been awarded the Jean Monnet Chair in EU Law.

Tamara Hervey is co-investigator in a Jean Monnet Network Grants, led by Katherine Fierlbeck of Dalhousie, Canada. A sub-agreement with City will bring funding to City Law School to support a number of paid student research internships to work on the project. Work will include organising a blended seminar/webinar to bring together contributors to a new online Encyclopaedia of EU Law, to be published by OUP. The General Editors of the Encyclopaedia are Sacha Garben, Bruges; Laurence Gormley, Groningen, and Kai Purnhagen, Bayreuth. Tamara is the Editor for entries on EU Health Law.
