Section of Anatomy

Anatomy is the study of the structure of the human body. It is one of the pillars of biological and medical education. It focuses primarily on the morphology, topography and neurovascular of bodily structures with an emphasis on how this knowledge can be applied clinically.

A through understanding of human anatomy is essential for performing physical examinations, interpreting medical images, understanding disease and understanding human evolution.

At City St George's, School of Health & Medical Sciences (Tooting), anatomy is predominantly taught in the purpose-built Anatomy Suite utilising a range of resources delivered by experts in anatomy, medicine, dentistry and education.

The Section of Anatomy is committed to delivering excellent and innovative teaching practices across multiple undergraduate and postgraduate courses.

Research interests across the department are diverse, and include clinical, radiological and living anatomy, in addition to anatomy and medical education.

Who we are

Our section is composed of active members of numerous learned societies including the Anatomical Society, British Association of Clinical Anatomists, Institute of Biomedical Science and the Academy of Medical Educators. In addition, members of our section are Fellows of the Higher Education Authority (HEA).

Our staff members have authored popular anatomical textbooks and are reviewers for various anatomical journals including Clinical Anatomy and Anatomical Sciences Education.

In addition to our teaching commitments, we have delivered international courses, training programmes and workshops in many fields including clinical anatomy, forensic anthropology, cardiology, neurology, psychiatry and neuropathology.

What we do

Teaching

Members of the Anatomy Section are heavily involved in the teaching, assessment and management of modules, years and courses of the MBBS5, MBBS4, Biomedical Science BSc and Physicians Associate MSc. In addition, we deliver anatomical education to students of Health Care Science BSc, Occupational Therapy BSc, Physiotherapy BSc, Therapeutic Radiology BSc and Diagnostic Radiography BSc.

At City St George's, School of Health & Medical Sciences (Tooting), Anatomy is taught as part of an integrated and spiral curriculum. In addition to lectures, anatomy is taught in the Anatomy Suite through multiple resources, including plastinated, potted and osteological human specimens, in addition to radiographic images. We integrate the world-leading technology in our teaching sessions, including Anatomage tables and Complete Anatomy, where students use digital 3D models to gain a greater understanding of the relationships of the human body. We also home to a library of plastic models that students can utilise in study periods.

Practical classes are led by academic staff and facilitated by our team of anatomy demonstrators, which is composed of Masters of Anatomical education, in addition to senior (higher level) students from City St George’s and core Surgical Trainees from the London Deanery of Surgeons.

Research

Members of the section carry out internationally recognised research in different areas of anatomical sciences which informs our teaching practice. Our varied research interested include anatomical structure and variation, anatomical and medical pedagogy. In addition, to specialised research in anaesthetic techniques, facial reconstruction and exercise biology. The section has close links with the NHS trusts and we often collaborate and provide assistance to clinicians and surgeons who are undertaking research projects or practising surgical techniques.
