Nanomal

The NANOMAL PROJECT

The FP7 European Union funded NANOMAL PROJECT (http://www.nanomal.org) is developing a simple, rapid and affordable point-of-care (POC) handheld diagnostic device to confirm malaria diagnosis and detect drug resistance in malaria parasites in minutes and at the patient’s side, by analysis of mutations in malaria DNA using a range of proven nanotechnologies.  The device will be critical at many levels in malarial control by:

  • Optimising individual treatments for patients (personalizing treatment)
  • Assessing the epidemiology of drug resistance in malaria endemic areas(identifying emerging drug resistance in real-time)
  • Assessing population impacts of anti-malarial interventions
