Outcomes of Novel Endovascular Technologies

Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is a condition that affects more than 200 million people worldwide. Our project will evaluate innovative, minimally invasive keyhole endovascular solutions to restore blood flow, reduce lower limb amputations, and enhance limb salvage, advancing care for those affected by severe end stage peripheral arterial disease.

Project background

Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is a condition that affects more than 200 million people worldwide. In PAD the arteries that carry blood into the legs become blocked or narrowed restricting the blood flow, without treatment many will end up with an amputation of the leg.

To avoid amputation an operation is needed to try and improve the blood flow, this can be done via open surgery or a minimally invasive keyhole operation where balloons and other techniques unblock the arteries. In recent years many new techniques have been developed to treat PAD, and this project will look at whether these new techniques have improved results for patients.

Project aims

  • Do keyhole operations for PAD improve outcomes for patients?
  • What other factors affect the success of a surgery?
  • Does how well your GP monitors you before and after surgery affect your recovery?
  • Does the number of operations performed in a specific hospital impact the success of the operation?

Project details

This is a retrospective study using data already routinely collected by NHS England. The Vascular Research Team have been given ethical approval for the data, and it will be stored safely at City, St Georges University and only used for this project. The data is anonymised so individual patients cannot be identified by the research team.

As the data is provided by the NHS it will have those who have chosen not to allow their data to be used for research and planning in accordance with the national data opt out (NDOO) policy already removed.
